Why Hire Accountants in Latin America?

Why hire accountants in Latin America instead of India or the Philippines? For a US or Canadian team that needs daily collaboration, the strongest reason is the working day: preparing the numbers, discussing an exception, and reviewing the answer can happen while the same people are online.

That matters when your accountant needs access to your controller, client, or operations team—not just a queue of transactions. Latin American locations can make that shared schedule easier to arrange without requiring the professional to work through the night.

It is a practical reason to consider LATAM, not a claim that one region produces better accountants. The right choice still depends on the individual's experience, agreed hours, responsibilities, and total client cost.

Why hire accountants in Latin America? Start with your working day

“Same time zone” is useful shorthand, but it is not true of every Latin American location or every North American office. Compare actual cities and schedules.

The example below shows local clock times when it is 9:00 a.m. in New York, on two specific dates:

Accountant's locationJanuary 15, 2026July 15, 2026
Bogotá, Colombia9:00 a.m.8:00 a.m.
New Delhi, India7:30 p.m.6:30 p.m.
Manila, Philippines10:00 p.m.9:00 p.m.

These are calculated clock comparisons, not claims about anyone's working hours. They use the UTC offsets published by NIST for US Eastern Time, Colombia's national time authority, CSIR-NPL for India, and PAGASA for Philippine Standard Time.

For a New York team, a Bogotá-based accountant could join a morning review during their own morning. The equivalent meeting falls in the evening in New Delhi and late evening in Manila. That can make LATAM an attractive starting point when a substantial shared working day is part of the role.

Do the same exercise for your office, the candidate's city, and seasonal clock changes. A Toronto example is not a substitute for a Vancouver schedule, and Bogotá is not a proxy for all of Latin America.

Where shared hours help accounting teams

Resolve close questions while the reviewer is available

Consider an illustrative month-end task: an accountant finds that a reconciliation does not match the ledger. The issue needs context from operations and a decision from the controller. When those people share working hours, they can discuss the discrepancy before the accountant continues.

The advantage is the opportunity for a shorter feedback loop—not a guaranteed faster close. Clear instructions and an available reviewer still matter. Our remote accountant support can be scoped around preparation, investigation, and the work your internal team will review.

Cover client conversations during the client's day

An accounting firm may need someone to clarify missing documents, discuss a schedule, or follow up on a transaction while the client is reachable. If that interaction is central to the job, live availability deserves as much attention as software experience.

In a brief for accounting staffing for CPA firms, identify which conversations the professional will handle and which stay with the firm's reviewer or partner. Then test the proposed person's ability to explain a real accounting issue clearly. Location does not establish communication skill.

Make onboarding and workload changes easier to coordinate

During the first reporting cycle, an accountant may need a walkthrough of your chart of accounts, supporting schedules, and review conventions. Shared hours give your team more opportunities to work through those questions together.

That can also help with temporary accounting capacity, where the scope may change as a backlog becomes clearer. Agree the review windows and escalation process rather than expecting a new person to infer how your business works.

Geographic proximity is useful—but evaluate the person and arrangement

For North American buyers considering in-person onboarding or occasional team meetings, geographic proximity is another reason to investigate Latin American options. Check the actual route between the two cities: distance alone does not guarantee a direct flight, an inexpensive visit, or simpler travel arrangements.

Remote work still needs a specific hiring brief. Ask each proposed accountant to demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience with your accounting framework and the responsibilities in the role.
  • Practical use of your systems, such as QuickBooks or NetSuite, where required.
  • A clear explanation of a reconciliation, unresolved difference, or review comment.
  • Availability for the agreed meetings and working window.

Do not infer these capabilities from a country, credential label, or accent. Use a relevant work sample and discuss how it was checked. Nexteam's talent evaluation approach provides context for the assessment conversation; the evidence must fit the actual assignment.

For a Western European buyer, the geographic comparison changes. Eastern European locations may offer a closer working day, and LATAM is not automatically the best option. Our broader nearshore and offshore finance guide explains how to start from the buyer's schedule.

When an India- or Philippines-based team can still fit

An evening on the clock does not mean the professional is unavailable. Providers can arrange shifted schedules: for example, TOA Global's Philippines offering explicitly describes adjusting to the client's time zone.

That means the useful comparison is normal-day overlap versus an agreed shifted schedule, not “LATAM responds and Asia does not.” Confirm how the proposed schedule is staffed and what coverage continues during absences or workload peaks.

An asynchronous arrangement may also fit a well-defined work package. If inputs are ready, the required output is clear, and the reviewer can pick it up in the next agreed window, a handoff can be workable. The same arrangement can be difficult when questions need immediate answers. Assess the workflow, not a regional stereotype.

You also do not need to replace a functioning team simply to add LATAM capacity. A professional handling daytime coordination could complement an existing team elsewhere, provided responsibilities, access, and review ownership are explicit.

Nearshore vs offshore accounting: compare the full client cost

When comparing nearshore accounting services with an India- or Philippines-based proposal, a lower quoted hourly rate does not settle the decision if the offers cover different work. Compare the same role, seniority, hours, duration, review responsibilities, and administrative support.

Include one-time fees, recurring client charges, tools, additional hours, and the time your own team expects to spend supervising the work. Do not compare a candidate's salary with an agency's client fee. Our Finance Talent Cost & Rates guide gives planning context without treating a broad range as a quote for a particular country or accountant.

Geography also does not dictate full-time hiring. Nexteam supports dedicated, fractional, interim, project-based, and hourly arrangements. Review the engagement models and choose the capacity the work needs.

Before requesting profiles, specify:

  1. The work and expected outputs: recurring close, reconciliations, reporting, or a defined backlog.
  2. Required experience, systems, and who reviews and approves the work.
  3. Your team's location and the shared working hours you need.
  4. Engagement length, expected capacity, and client-budget context.

If your accounting work depends on live interaction during the North American day, LATAM deserves a place on your shortlist. Send Nexteam the brief and state whether Latin America is a requirement or a preference. We can assess relevant matches, schedules, and terms; availability depends on the assignment and current talent pool.

Questions buyers ask

Is a LATAM accountant in the same time zone as our team?

Sometimes, but not always. Check both cities, agreed working hours, and daylight-saving changes. The goal is useful shared hours, not an identical label on the clock.

Is hiring in Latin America always cheaper than India or the Philippines?

No universal price advantage is established here. Request comparable client quotes for the same scope and consider the working arrangement alongside the fee. This article does not publish candidate salaries or rank countries by cost.

Can we start with fractional or project-based accounting support?

Yes, you can brief Nexteam for those arrangements. Define the workload, review window, and desired start period. The match and commercial terms need confirmation; a regional preference does not guarantee immediate availability.
