How much working time actually overlaps?

For a North American team, nearshore accounting can put preparation, questions and review into a shared workday. Specify the working window you need before narrowing the search to a country.

Location alone does not create a shared workday. These examples assume 9am–5pm local working windows on both sides, on January 15 and July 15, 2026. Breaks are not deducted; the table describes clock overlap, not a candidate’s availability.

Hiring for a West Coast team? A 3pm Los Angeles review falls at 8pm in Buenos Aires in January and 7pm in July. Agree a suitable schedule with the person before hiring, or move that review earlier. “Latin America” alone does not establish afternoon Pacific coverage.

Time-zone sources: IANA · Argentina · Brazil · Colombia · Mexico · US daylight saving.

A preparer needs answers before the review deadline. A controller or client-facing accountant may need longer coverage for decisions and meetings. Our time-zone overlap guide helps define that window. Still comparing regions? Read Latin America versus India and the Philippines for accounting support.

Nearshore staffing or outsourced accounting?

Nearshore describes where the professional works relative to your business. Outsourcing describes an arrangement that can range from external staffing to a provider-managed service. They answer different questions.

Nexteam’s embedded model gives you a professional who joins your team. Your manager directs the role; the person learns your business and takes ownership of the agreed work. Read deliverables or a team member if you are deciding who should manage preparation and review.

Look for evidence behind the CV

RequirementA useful way to check it
Accounting judgmentDiscuss a relevant close issue. Ask what the person checked, what they could resolve and what required approval.
Your ERP and workflowHave them explain a reconciliation from source report to ledger, including a mismatch. Distinguish hands-on preparation from reviewing reports someone else produced.
Written and spoken EnglishDiscuss an unresolved item, then ask for a short update stating the issue, action needed, owner and deadline. Match the standard to internal or client-facing work.
Ownership under pressureIntroduce a missing input near the close deadline. Look for a clear escalation, a revised plan and visibility for the reviewer.
Actual capacityConfirm the person’s start date, recurring hours, close-week coverage and other commitments. A preferred time zone is only the starting point.

A hiring brief that produces a useful shortlist

“An accountant in Argentina” sets a location. The following example gives a recruiter and candidate enough information to discuss the actual job:

Role: Senior accountant supporting the close for three US entities.
First responsibility: Own cash, prepaid and intercompany schedules from source data through review.
Systems and standard: NetSuite and Excel; relevant US GAAP close experience.
Working relationship: Reports to our controller and coordinates missing inputs directly with operations.
Schedule: Recurring capacity with agreed close-week coverage; 10am–2pm New York overlap required throughout the year.
Ready for review means: Balances tied to the ledger, differences explained or escalated, supporting files attached and open items assigned an owner.
Hiring evidence: Comparable responsibilities, a practical work discussion, English and the proposed person’s confirmed schedule.

This example can be adapted to your business. Add transaction volume, known backlog and the close timetable: three entities with clean records can be a very different assignment from three entities with months of unresolved items.

Keep the search wide where you can. Argentina or Brazil may be a preference; the essential requirements may be close experience, English and a particular overlap window. Separate those before narrowing the shortlist.

From brief to a working member of your team

  1. 1

Share the work you need covered

Define responsibilities, systems, hours and the first output. Include whether Latin America is a requirement or a preference.

  2. 2

    Review the proposed professionals

Compare relevant responsibilities and assessment evidence. Interview for the work, then confirm the individual’s capacity, schedule and terms.

  3. 3

    Agree the first complete cycle

Name the manager and reviewer, arrange access and define what is ready for review. Use that first cycle to build context and expand ownership.

Plan for a weekly 30–60-minute one-to-one and the relevant team or project meeting. Use our meeting rhythm and 30–60–90-day plan to build the working relationship after hiring.

Compare the complete cost of the arrangement

Start with the responsibility and hours: a preparer handling defined schedules, a senior accountant coordinating a close and a controller leading review are different roles. Add the systems, industry, communication and start-date requirements before requesting a proposal.

Compare the complete client charge for the same scope and period. Ask what administration is included, how additional hours are handled and what changes when the engagement ends. Use the finance talent cost guide for the questions to include; country averages alone do not price your role.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does nearshore accounting mean for a US or Canadian business?

It usually means working with accounting professionals in a nearby region, such as Latin America, where useful working-hour overlap may be easier to arrange. The practical test is the schedule of the individual and your team. A regional label does not guarantee full-day availability.

Can we hire accountants in Argentina or Brazil?

You can include either country in your brief. We review the location preference alongside the role, relevant experience, English, schedule and available matches. If the priority is overlap and accounting expertise, keeping the search open across Latin America may give you more options.

Will the accountant know US GAAP and our software?

Specify the reporting framework, software and actual work in the brief. We assess those requirements for each proposed professional. Living in a particular country or holding an accounting qualification does not establish experience with your company’s accounting treatments or ERP.

Who manages the accountant?

Your manager sets priorities, provides business context and reviews the work. The accountant joins your systems and team routines. If you want a provider to manage a complete accounting process and deliver the finished output, describe that separately so the service responsibilities can be assessed.

Can the engagement be part-time or interim?

Dedicated, part-time and interim arrangements can be considered against the workload and available capacity. Include close-period requirements and the handover when defining hours and duration.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant in Latin America?

Request a quote for the role, experience, hours, systems and engagement terms you need. Compare the full client charge, included administration and any separate fees. A candidate’s salary is not the same as the total price of a staffing arrangement.

What happens after I request profiles?

Tell us what the person needs to own and leave your contact details at the final step. Include your Latin America preference in the brief. Nexteam reviews the requirements and follows up about relevant professionals and next steps.
